Pakistan's agriculture based economy may face a setback in the wake of delay in wheat sowing in most parts of Punjab and Sindh provinces that may untimely result in the lowering of production.

Food Ministry sources said that wheat sowing only on 60 percent area has so far been completed. The government has targeted sowing over eight million acres.

They said that sowing before November 15 ensures maximum production. The government has fixed 22 million tons as production target for the wheat crop.

Sources expressed fear there might have been a reversal of a "magnificent" 7.5 percent growth rate the country's agriculture sector witnessed last fiscal year.

Their reason is that as cotton production has already registered a decline of 2.5 million bales (12.5 million bales production against 15 million bales target), any shortfall in wheat crop would be unbearable for the country's economy.

And since agriculture sector contributes some 25 percent to Pakistan's total national product, it may hit the country's GDP growth target adversely, they added.
